Synopsis:
Set to open to the public in March 2025, the Kai Tak Sports Park is the largest sports infrastructure project in Hong Kong’s history. Designed with the captivating theme “Pearl of the Orient”, the Main Stadium’s striking pearlescent façade forms a prominent feature against the backdrop of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour. The stadium features 50,000 seats, an acoustically sealed retractable roof, flexible pitch system to allow it to host a variety of events, and a full-height, glazed façade on the south to provide expansive views across Victoria Harbour.
In this technical talk, Arup and Robert Bird Group will jointly present on the design and construction of the Main Stadium with a focus on the long-span roof design and construction challenges.
Wei Lin from Arup will provide a brief project overview and share his experience in deriving the structural design concept of the long-span steel roof structure for the Main Stadium. He will also talk about some particular highlights of the design including steelwork design optimization, design for constructability and DfMA, and how these principles were implemented for the successful fabrication, delivery and erection of the roof steelwork.
Daniel Hill from Robert Bird Group will talk about the methodology and sequence of erection for the Main Stadium roof structure, including the temporary works design required to strand jack over 10,000t of the roof steelwork. He will also share details of RBG’s staged construction analysis, used to verify that the roof had sufficient strength and stability throughout construction.
