(Jointly Organized with Materials Division)
Speakers: Dr Victor C Li, Visiting Professor and Fellow of Institute of Advanced Studies, HKUST, E.B. Wylie Chair Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI USA
Synopsis:
While significant advancement in high strength concrete has been made in the last decades, the lack of tensile ductility remains a bottle neck in concrete structural performance. This presentation will focus on a relatively new concrete material (ECC) that exhibits a metal-like behavior under tension, with strain capacity several hundred times that of normal concrete. Emphasis will be placed on the application of ECC on enhancing infrastructure resiliency and durability. Examples on innovative full-scale use of this material in building, transportation and water infrastructure systems in Asia and the US will be presented.
About Speaker:
Dr. Victor Li’s research interests include multifunctional concrete aimed at enhancing infrastructure sustainability and resiliency. He led the research team that invented “Bendable Concrete”. Professor Li was awarded the International Grand Prize for Innovation by the Construction Industry Council in 2015 and the life-time achievement award by RILEM in 2016. In 2004, Professor Li was honored by the Technical University of Denmark with a “Doctor technics honoris causa”. Professor Li is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the World Innovation Forum, and the American Concrete Institute. His work has been featured in the CBS Evening News, CNN, the Discovery Channel, the Portland Cement Association, and the Forbes Magazine, amongst many other public media. Professor Li is named inventor on ten US patents.
