Scope and Objectives
Breakage of tempered glass may be attributed to three primary causes, i.e. design fault, bad workmanship and spontaneous breakage respectively. Amongst the these causes, the spontaneous breakage due to Nickel Sulphide (NiS) inclusion is reckoned as the commonest cause that is directly related to the quality assurance and control during the course of manufacturing tempered glass.
In the advent of a series of incidents on glass breakage, the control on the tempered glass has been tightened up. As stipulated in the Practice Note for Authorized Persons, Registered Structural Engineers and Registered Geotechnical Engineers (PNAP) APP-37 on Curtain Wall, Window and Window Wall Systems, the following documents are required to be submitted: –
a) Quality Assurance Scheme by the glass manufacturer prior to the consent application of the glass works;
b) Quality Supervision Plan by the RSE prior to the consent application of the glass works;
c) Heat Soak Process Compliance Report by the RSE prior to the application of an occupation permit; and
d) Quality Supervision Report by the RSE prior to the application of an occupation permit.
The workshop is tailor-made for the quality control supervisors as required under the PNAP APP-37. They are Technically Competent Persons of grade T3 (under the RSE stream) and of grade T1 (under the RC stream)working in the glass façade field. The DO and DON’TS will be deliberated so as to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency when carrying out building control on tempered glass. The heat soak process and calibration requirement is conducted to the requirements as stipulated in new version of BS EN 14179-1:2016.
The documents and tests that need to be prepared and carried out by the manufacturer in the quality assurance would be cited. The techniques of calibrating the heat soak oven, the proper installation of the data logger with thermocouples on the glass surface and the rationale of installing an independent data logger by the TCP-T1would be mentioned in great detail.
Speakers
The HKISC have the great pleasure to invite Ir Dr. Dominic YU, a Corporate Member of the HKIE as well as an expert in the structural design and use of glass, to deliver the workshop. Dr. YU is now working at Alpha Consulting Limited, responsible for designing and supervising a number of curtain walls, window walls and glass balustrade works.
