Synopsis:

Located at the new Guangzhou new CBD and standing at a height of 530m with 111 floors, the Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre is ranked the 5th tallest completed building in the world by CTBUH. Started in 2009, about a year after the catastrophic Sichuan Earthquake, the design of this super high-rise building was subject to the tightened scrutiny in seismic design by the national expert panel as well as the upgraded seismic design code. Notwithstanding this, the project team was not contented with a conventional or the more commonly accepted structural form for skyscrapers in China but decided to meet with the challenge by proposing a structural scheme to satisfy the client’s wish and aspiration on functional use and view with minimum obstruction. This presentation will cover the various challenges faced by the project team and the innovations applied in both design and construction aspects of this project to make it a success.
