Located at the new Guangzhou new CBD and standing at a height of 530m with 111 floors, the Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre is ranked the 5th tallest completed building in the world by CTBUH. Started in 2009, about a year after the catastrophic Sichuan Earthquake, the design of this super high-rise building was subject to the tightened scrutiny in seismic design by the national expert panel as well as the upgraded seismic design code. Notwithstanding this, the project team was not contented with a conventional or the more commonly accepted structural form for skyscrapers in China but decided to meet with the challenge by proposing a structural scheme to satisfy the client’s wish and aspiration on functional use and view with minimum obstruction. This presentation will cover the various challenges faced by the project team and the innovations applied in both design and construction aspects of this project to make it a success.
Anthony Chiu is a Director of Arup. He has over 20 years’ experience in structural engineering design and management. Anthony has a wide and diversified project portfolio including fast-track, large scale, complex A&A works and super high-rise developments. He joined Arup in 1990. In 1996, he was sent to the Arup London office to work for a year. After his return to Hong Kong, he continued to work on interesting projects like the Kwai Tsing Theatre, part of which was designed to sit on a vibration isolation system, and various residential development phases at the Kowloon Station Development. Later he became a key member of the Arup team working on the Macau projects before he acted as the Arup project team leader of the CTF Guangzhou Finance Centre. He is currently involved in two other supertall buildings over 600m as well as mega resort developments in Macau.
